In 1982 Montgomery received LeFlore County's Distinguished Citizenship and Service Award. The next year he was the recipient of the Oklahoma Veterinarian Medical Association's Outstanding Service Award. He was honored by Langston University in 1985 with a distinguished Honorary Alumnus Award and the school later opened the John W. Montgomery Multipurpose Center. 

In 1993 he received the NAACP's Presidential Service Award and he was inducted into the Prairie View A&M University Hall of Fame. His hometown newspaper Poteau Daily News and Sun honored him with the Lifetime Contribution Award in 1995. Oklahoma State University awarded him a Doctorate of Humane Letters in 1996 and he was recognized for being a true pioneer of veterinary medicine and Oklahoma higher education.
