In April 1967, Governor Dewey Bartlett appointed Dr. Montgomery to the state Mental Health Board. Dr. Montgomery also served on the Poteau City Planning Commission, was a member of Poteau Chamber of Commerce, and chaired the Board of Deacons at Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

He served on the Oklahoma State Board of Vocational and Technical Education before his appointment to the Oklahoma State University and A&M Colleges Board of Regents in 1975. Under his leadership, the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine facilities improved and in 1981, the college established the John W. Montgomery Endowed Scholarship.

"Gov. Names Dr. Montgomery to Mental Health Bd.

Governor Dewey Bartlett appointed Dr. John Montgomery, Poteau veterinarian, to the state Mental Health Board, it was learned today.

Dr. Montgomery succeeds Dr. James A. Cox, of Oklahoma City, and his term will expire December 31, 1972.

Widely known throughout the state, Dr. Montgomery has been active in civil affairs and human relations."
